Statement

Using a combination of traditional mediums such as charcoal and oil paints, as well as sculptural installation, Stephanie Aviles attempts to develop an understanding of the intricate concept of self.  Through remembering our lived experiences and manifesting them as physical material, we can solidify our understanding of our own personal growth. Much of her work is centered around notions of time and memory, and the many conflicting ideas that characterize the passage of time - permanent and temporary, predictable and unpredictable, resistance and acceptance, and more.

Having spent the majority of her life on Cape Cod, MA, Aviles is no stranger to the incredible natural beauty of the earth, and she continually aims to recover, and sometimes reinvent, the physical and mental spaces of her childhood. Because of this, her work is often imbued with a sense of nostalgia and a distinct longing for the lost places of her past.
